What are the goals of networking?

This video, created for the COSE Education Hub, discusses the primary purpose of networking and offers advice on how to approach it effectively.

The key themes are:

Reframing the Goal of Networking: While many believe the goal of networking is to acquire clients, it is actually about learning. The focus should be on understanding others: how they conduct business, how they interact with clients, their motivations, and their professional backgrounds.

Categorizing Networking Interactions: The "Good" Interactions: These are individuals you may want to keep around as potential referral sources, resources, or business friends. While they could eventually become clients, this is not the immediate objective of a networking event. The "Bad" Interactions: These are individuals to avoid. They are often characterized by trying to sell immediately, aggressively distributing business cards, and talking extensively without listening or showing interest in others.

Adopting a "Learning" Mindset: Approaching networking with an open mind and curiosity leads to more enjoyable and productive experiences. By focusing on learning instead of telling others about your own work, you become more valuable to them. Demonstrating genuine care and interest in others helps build the trust necessary for successful professional relationships.
